7 generations of winegrowers

From generation to generation

Jean-baptiste Jonot (1800-1872) and Joseph Henri Jonot (1828-1904) were the first to develop the family winery. At that time, they mainly produced still wine and the Massif de Saint Thierry region was under the control of the Abbot of the monastery. With phylloxera, a large part of the region's vineyards nevertheless disappeared at the beginning of the 20th century, and only a few plots remained.

It was from the 1960s that the vineyard was gradually replanted in the area, supported by the creation of Pouillon cooperative and the generalization of champagne making. In 1978, Pierre Jonot and Christian Jonot together founded the Bacchus wine company, which later became the Christian Jonot & Fils champagne brand in 2011.

A new era

In 2020 and after several years of thinking, we decided to leave the cooperative and become independent champagne growers in order to create our own wines and thus magnify our terroirs. Winegrowers of pure tradition like our ancestors were, we let nature and the alchemy between the elements express itself to develop unique vintages.

In 2023, we are happy to finally release our first 6 exceptional wines under the name Jonot Frères.

OUR VINEYARD

Our terroirs

Our approach is based above all on the promotion of our work in our vineyard which, despite the proximity of the different plots, present a diversity of soils ideal for innovation.

Our family vineyard of approximately 5 hectares is spread over the three villages of Thil, Pouillon and Saint-Thierry. Our plots are mostly planted with Pinot Noir and Meunier, and to a lesser extent, with Chardonnay, old vines (over 25 years old) as well as younger ones.

Each of our plots is a unique terroir. In Saint-Thierry, the soil favors the growth of an expressive and powerful Pinot Noir. Our plots in Pouillon, planted with Meunier, are a heterogeneous mixture of chalk at depth and sand and silt on the surface. Finally, the sandy soil of Thil, with its high salinity, gives our Chardonnays a fine quality of development and expression.

These particularities allow our grapes to develop their own identity, which we develop through appropriate viticultural practices.

Our viticultural practices

Listening to nature and looking for the best practices to promote the expression of our terroirs, we work each plot differently (grape variety, pruning, treatment, etc.).

The biological diversity of our vineyard is one of our major concerns. Thus, all of our viticultural methods are sustainable (High Environmental Value level 3 certification): controlled natural grass cover, mechanical weeding, elimination of insecticides, control of fertilizers thanks to soil analyses.

This sustainable viticulture is our secret towards controlled yields and a quality of soil allowing our vines to draw the best resources to produce the best grapes which will then be used to create our wines.
